Return of the Triffids
Today I talked for forty minutes or more, thirty of them accompanied by a bang-up slide presentation I'd made, to the Aphasia Support Group at Thom's (now "Care Partners"). The embedded movies didn't work, because I had to show it from a quick CD, but the people liked it anyway. This was my day off before end of the year meetings and it was fittingly a non-work project.
The bamboo is not a part of the show. It's from the front yard, where Caleb's thoughtful root divisions are beginning to hint of a return of John Wyndham's triffids. (If you're not over fifty you probably don't remember the triffids. Too bad for you. But just imagine tall, willowy, swaying, moving green plant things moving into your neighborhood.0
Bamboo is interesting in its contradictions: graceful, feathery tops that sway in the wind; light, rustly leaves, and trunks of green Kevlar. Mattell Tough Stuff. Green steel.

awww, bamboo. i like bamboo. someday, my dreams of a bamboo fence at the edge of your front yard will be realized. we just have to figure out how to keep it limited to the edge.....
Yeah, darlin' -- and you know that one reason I'm photographing it now, in its virility, is that it's not long for this world. Transplanting bamboo in your mother's yard when she doesn't know about it is right up there with giving someone a kitten or a puppy as a present, without checking before hand. Don't mean to be harsh, but.... I'm coping, and the bamboo is very beautiful. Lourdes loves it, and would take some if she had sun. Well well,, maybe I need a panda!
By the way, the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, RI, does not have a baby panda, but it does have a baby giraffe AND a baby seal. Of which, see more a-yonder.
Bri -- i wonder if you could grow a stand of this bamboo on your estate? Let's check the zone before I drive up in July.. We're OFFICIALLY in the same Zone 6, but the extremes of the region and the microclimates within an area are very important.
mom, you approved the transplant. you were there the day i dug it from the front yard (under the porch awning) and transplanted it to the back yard.
The BACK yard, yes. But the FRONT yard corner, no! I thought you told me you did that at another time, when I was away --?? Forgive me if I chide you wrongly.
my estate! I tried planting some form of bamboo on my estate once, but it didn't take. I would love to try again.

ok, i did train it just to the edge of the walk from front porch to driveway. but it has since made it's own way to the front corner (SE corner), where it is coming up through the yellow flowery bush.
